Project Overview
The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) has developed a program to provide schools and school districts with vital information on education networks in order to ensure the privacy and the security of data within their systems. CoSN also recognizes the importance of online safety and security for students. This is an issue that each school, school district or educational network should evaluate based on its own needs, identifying such factors as community norms, the sophistication of its students or users, and its particular computer infrastructure.

Here you can find tools and information for Superintendents, School Board members, and Technology Leaders/CTOs to assess and improve the security of their technology systems in order to protect the safety of staff and students, contribute to the educational mission of their schools, and maintain community support. This site will also provide security updates and articles to keep you up to date on current security issues.

To help this process, this web site contains:

  • Tools to help school technology leaders analyze their network's current security status in comparison to other districts and against industry best practices, validating what they are doing well and giving them insight into how risk can be further reduced.
  • Strategies for developing and implementing a cost-effective action plan to strengthen security and handle crises.
  • Guidance for communicating the importance of security to the school community.

As students become sophisticated users of technology, it is also clear that schools need to provide guidance and procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff online. This site will provide information for education leaders as they address online security.
